Government IT Response to Sensitive Information on Smartphones – VidOvation Blog

When cell phones first emerged, no one anticipated exactly how enthralled we’d become. Today they are actually tiny personal computers moving large amounts of data. We all have them and cling to them, each and every one of us. That includes government employees.

With the added ability to move government sensitive data via smartphone from person to person comes the added challenge of protecting and/or encrypting that data. It’s vital that security keep up with the fast paced changes in the IT world such as cloud storage across devices, real time collaboration and mobility.

Word is out that the structure of government information technology is rapidly changing globally to meet new and evolving needs. Andre Mendes, Director of Global Operations at the Broadcasting Board of Governors says the key to security among-st government employees is rapidly becoming about anonymity as opposed to purely the data being moved. Anonymity may be important for two reasons. One if you don’t know who’s information you have, it’s more difficult to abuse. Two, if everyone’s data appears anonymous, it’s nearly impossible for hackers to ferret out sensitive information in the first place. Some government agencies are taking it upon themselves to work with big name mobile phone companies to create specialized software for this very purpose.
