The Stagebox range of switches is a development of the popular ARG EASY product range initially conceived for Broadcast applications. The range of switches is designed around a Gigabit Ethernet Carrier Class switch engine and is intended for Telecom and Carrier Ethernet applications, supporting MEF service delivery, network OAM, and timing over packet solutions for IEEE 1588v2 and Synchronous Ethernet. The switch is designed to replicate synchronous legacy networks and has timing options for a 1pps external reference input from GPS, an internal l layer 1 SyncE module, an internal PTP best in class layer 2 IEEE 1588v2 software algorithm as well as TSoIP options for STM-1/OC3 and STM-4/OC12. It is also available in a ruggedized form using robust industry standard Neutrik connectors. Interface is via 8 x RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet ports and two SFP ports with options for short or long haul optical modules, copper modules or TSoIP modules or in the case of the ruggedised version using Neutrik connectors, 6 x RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet ports and two SFP ports with options for short or long haul optical modules The SFP modules need to be specified at purchase and a full range of single mode and multimode modules are available.
TSoIP Operation:
The SONET/SDH networks are connected to each other via the Gigabit Packet Switched Network by means of a Pseudo Wire. A Pseudo Wire is a transparent “wire like” connection through the packet network and allows a TDM traffic connection from SONET/ SDH network-A towards SONET/SDH network-B and vice versa. The Pseudo Wire can be a uni-directional connection or a bidirectional connection through the packet network and it is strongly recommended to run the switch in SyncE mode to meet jitter requirements. Each SDH/Sonet module takes one SFP port.
Synchronous Ethernet:
An option is available to enable the switch to operate in Synchronous Ethernet . The precision clock is extracted from a port using DSPLL® technology, The switch can operate as Master or Slave. The port used for the master clock is programmable from the switch GUI.
GPS Mode:
Where the quality of the Ethernet Network cannot be guaranteed an option is available to synchronise the switch to an external 1pps signal from a GPS module. This is a software setup in the switch GUI and an external SMA connector is provided on the rear panel. There is a suitable GPS module available from ARG details of which can be obtained from sales@arg.co.uk A version of the switch is available with the GPS module built in with connection to a suitable GPS antenna via an SMA connector on the rear panel. This enables a switch to be setup as the Master clock source with the rest of the network slaving via PTP or SyncE.
IEEE 1588:
All versions of the switch are layer 2 IEEE 1588v2 enabled. The switch has been selected by the Stagebox www.stagebox.tv team to maintain the integrity of camera sync over Ethernet networks. There is a degree of variance in Ethernet propagation times during transmission. IEEE 1588 is now a very comprehensive solution to do very precise time synchronisation in an Ethernet Network.
